A Student’s View of School
Interview with a Soon to be 3rd Grade Boy…
A student’s view of school
The following is a question/response session with a 2nd grade boy offering A Student’s View of School:
Q: What do you like about the school you attend?
A: I like…ummm…the technology and the fun games we play with.
Q: What type of technology do you use?
A: IPADs, laptops, computers, that’s it.
Q: What excites you about the technology?
A: Ummm, well the coding that we do. Like, Tynker is one of the fun games, because it helps you to code and you have a fun at the same time.
Q: What type of technology do you think you parents had when they were in the 2nd grade?
A: Computers…? Maybe computers??? Hold on, I need to think about that…
Q: Do you think they used paper back then?
Q: What do you think was the coolest devices your parents had in school?
A: Computers, but not as fancy as they have in 2016.
Q: What do you mean, “fancy?”
A: With all the Apps that we have today, like with Safari.
Q: How many students do you think were in each classroom when your parents were in second grade?
A: That’s a hard question, but I think I have an answer…..10.
Q: How many students were in your second grade class this past school year?
Q: With two teachers?
Q; So, do you think that school is harder or easier than when your parents were in the second grade?
A: [Long Pause] Harder!
Q: But, why?
A: Because parent’s couldn’t afford to have the right education back then.
Q: So, your parents pay for your education?
A: No, but all the extra stuff kids do.
Q: Would you say that the “extra stuff” is important?
A: Because, maybe your child might want-ta learn some new things in basketball or chess, cause that’s what I do!
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being very little, 10 being super-duper, how important is it to you to learn new things?
Q: That’s a lot. Why, 10?
A: Because if you don’t try anything new, you won’t learn anything new.
Q: Would you say that you have many friends?
Q: Can you tell me if and why friends at school are important to you?
A: Cause if you don’t make new friends and you might be annoyed by your other friend if he’s annoying, cause you’ll get tired of him. So you need more than one friend.
Q: Being that you so successfully completed 2nd grade, what advice can you give to a new second grader?
A:Try your best. If you take a test and you have extra time make sure to look over your answers to see if they are correct. Have fun!
